Axel picked her up from the estate a few days later, and she sat beside him in the front seat of the car. Sophie could move her fingers, but she wore a pair of black silk gloves to hide the purple discoloration. They greeted each other professionally when she got into the vehicle, but soon they were both silent as Axel maneuvered his way through the underground causeway and into the middle-class district of Quezon.

Even though the autodrive feature was active, he still kept his eyes in front while observing the traffic ahead, ready to grab the steering wheel in case of an emergency. Axel still felt shame over what had happened at the space station, and he was eager to get things right this time.

Sophie glanced at him, her hands resting on her lap. “You okay?”

Axel pursed his lips. Maybe she isn’t mad at me after all. “Yeah, I’m fine. I should actually ask you that.”

“You did.”

He gave her a surprised glance before turning his attention back to the road ahead of them. “Did I?”

Sophie sighed. “The moment I got in the car.”

“I’m sorry,” he said sheepishly. “I guess I really owe you one.”

“For what?”

“For not getting me fired. When you told me to leave your room at the hospital I thought I was out of a job,” Axel said.

Sophie made a faint smile. “How could I fire someone who saved my life?”

“If only I could have gotten to you sooner, you wouldn’t have to wear those gloves,” Axel said softly. “I keep thinking about what I should have done differently.”

“You did what you could,” she said. “I’m alive and that’s what counts.”

Axel smiled. “Thanks. I also appreciate you asking for me to accompany you to the safe house.”

“It’s by default. You’re one of the few people I can trust right now,” Sophie said.

“I’ll make sure I won’t let you down ever again, I promise,” Axel said as the car stopped in front of a nondescript house in one of the gated neighborhoods. “We’re here.”

“Who else is in this place other than our two guests?”

Axel switched to manual control as he maneuvered the car into the tight garage. “The standard four-man security team. Three teams total on an eight hour rotational basis.”

Sophie unbuckled her seat belt. The tips of her fingers till hurt, but they felt better than yesterday. “You got a gun?”

“A pistol. Why?”

“Did you bring the other stuff I told you?”

Axel nodded, unzipping his jacket and revealing the stun rod. “Yes.”

“Let’s talk to Malinowski first,” Sophie said as she opened the car door and got out.

Axel used his smartcom to key in the code to open the front door. A plainclothes security officer was waiting for them at the foyer, and they both gave each other a nod of acknowledgement. After closing and locking the door, the guard led them upstairs into a bedroom. Axel knocked twice before opening the door and strode inside, followed by Sophie.

Edmund Malinowski wore a loose bathrobe and had been sitting by the side of the rumpled bed when they came in.
